Tonight’s Workout & So Called Personal Trainers
Do people truly not know the difference between competent and incompetent? I have watched for the last several years the personal trainers at the gym (currently I am at Life Time, but I have been to others that are worse) who just seem to be begging for a lawsuit. There was the PT who decided it would be a good idea to stand on the treadmill I was using, holding on to the back of the handrail while he trained a client. Tonight I saw the same PT reading directly out of a program book to his clients, guiding them through a session (seriously, it is called preparation!)
I watched in disgust while two trainers tonight completely ignored their clients to gape at the television screens (granted the election is intriguing, but you are charging $65 / hr here). The list goes on and on, asking overweight clients who are completely deconditioned to get up on Bosus and complete moves that only highly trained athletes really need to be doing, ignoring form and alignment in these and other clients – do people just not know what to expect from a trainer?
My all time favorite tonight was the trainer who plopped her client on a rowing machine, stated "get started I’ll be right back", and the client looked completely at a loss for what to do. Now tonight the only thing I didn’t see was the trainers doing what they usually do best, carrying on personal conversations with people other than their clients, turning their backs entirely to their clients and ignoring them. The other missing potential lawsuit was the 30 something trainer showing a 20 something female how to do squats and cupping her glutes – I love that one!
My son and I hit the pool – congrats go to him for finally being a strong enough swimmer to go down the water slides (children must be able to swim to the edge of the pool unassisted) – he did get pretty tuckered out when he went down the far side slide and had to paddle twice the distance. After our swim I went to workout.
25 minutes on the Treadmill at 3% incline and 2.6 speed. The baby is starting to drift down, so I am getting even more limited in what I can do, the terrible cough I have hasn’t made it easier. I really don’t fit into the leg press machine, and something about the angle of the extension and curl machines makes me uncomfortable so I decided on 3 sets of 12 reps – super set Squats against the wall with ball, Plies the same way and Pelvic Tilts. I finished up with an 18lb body bar across the shoulders and stationary lunging – OMG! I almost didn’t make it down the stairs. In my defense yesterday’s two Power Yoga classes involved a lot of lunging and moving lunges.
