Just got in from a Power Yoga Class – a treat to myself
It has been so long since I took someone else’s class – mainly due to time and my own teaching schedule, but also because of cost. A newish studio in the area was running a $20 unlimited week deal so I gave it a try. The owner/instructor was very inviting when I came in, addressed me by name and seemed to know all of the other students. The atmosphere was very inviting, heated to 90 degrees . Because I might have needed to leave to nurse, I sat at the front of the room, where no-one else was – I know why now – space heater.
Anyway, I surrendered to being a student but couldn’t really get into the class because the teacher was
constantly talking, not relating much about the poses themselves – just information about herself, a few ecstatic moans, and banter about Super Bowl – what really started to bother me was the constant discussion of fear, how we all have fear, how we need to let go of our fear brains, and the such. It was a bit too preachy for me and didn’t really help my practice to focus on the negative. Also, as a former English teacher, the constant use of the word "like" which was interjected every 5th word (I started counting subconsciously and could not stop – I needed something to focus on) and "really".
Honestly though, I think the instructor is just new and starting to get comfortable teaching. She was very good though with boundaries, didn’t touch people and tried a verbal adjustment with me, which I attempted and then reverted to my modification (due to a torn rotator cuff I find Natarajasana hard to do with my arm internally rotated gripping the inside of my ankle).
Some of the core work was a little too demanding for me as well, so I sat those poses out, even Garudasana I skimped on to conserve my energy for the three classes I teach today. Savasana was too short for me and again, too much talking – no guided relaxation either which was a disappointment – that was the only expectation I have since I love it.
Not sure if I will go back, drop in was $15 and the week unlimited was $20 so for a $5 difference I won’t beat myself up about it.
