AMA Urges Patients to Dispose of Prescription Drugs on April 27
CHICAGO – April 23, 2013 – The American Medical Association (AMA) encourages patients to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on April 27 to safely dispose of their unused or expired prescription drugs.
“Unused prescription drugs in the home can easily fall into the wrong hands, potentially leading to drug abuse,” said AMA President Jeremy A. Lazarus, M.D. “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day provides a safe and legal way for people to get rid of the prescription drugs they don’t need.”
National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day will take place on Saturday, April 27 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. To find a collection site near you, visit http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/index.html.
Unused prescription drugs left in homes are highly susceptible to diversion and contribute to the public health epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Improper drug disposal can also pose a threat to the environment and public health. About 46 million Americans have been exposed to prescription drugs through their drinking water.
The AMA also offers physicians other free educational resources to help combat prescription drug abuse and diversion. The AMA currently offers archived webinars on topics addressing responsible opioid prescribing. To learn more about the AMA’s efforts to combat prescription drug abuse and diversion, visit AMA-assn.org/go/stopdrugabuse.

The Chicago Gluten & Allergen Free Expo will take place on April 20th – 21st at the Renaissance Schaumburg Convention Center Hotel in Schaumburg, Illinois. Tickets can be purchased in advance (www.gfafexpo.com) or at the door.
The gluten-free food revolution is expected to reach over $6 billion this year and is the fastest growing claim in Nielsen’s Health & Wellness Top 20 Claims. With 90% of shoppers wanting to sample products before they make a purchase, the Gluten & Allergen Free Expo allows the sampling of hundreds of products in one location. The Expo’s offerings will meet the needs of the celiac community, those with gluten sensitivities, auto-immune, inflammatory diseases, and autism. Athletes and the health conscious will greatly benefit as well.
There are more than 15 million Americans on a gluten-free diet and most are still searching for the best products available. “The GFAF Expo is like a giant shopping mall for people with food allergies. One of the biggest complaints is that many of the restricted diet products don’t taste good or that they are so expensive. The GFAF Expo allows everyone to taste the products before they make a purchase,” says GFAF Expo Founder and CEO, Jen Cafferty.
The Gluten & Allergen Free Expo features over 150 vendors sampling and selling products. The Expo also showcases personal care products, vitamins and supplements, and green household cleaning alternatives. Both the dedicated peanut/nut-free area and special area for gluten-free kids are crowd pleasers. Allergen savvy health care practitioners will be available to answer medical questions. Guests can attend free lectures, connect with gluten and allergen-free restaurants, associated non-profits, and much more.
