The importance of Compassion in Thai Massage

IMG_0241 The purpose of Compassion in Thai massage

Emily Canibano

Recitation of the Om Namo to call forth the memory of Jivaka and Buddha helps in connecting to the long lineage of those earliest practitioners of Thai massage. It is a request for their guidance in helping to alleviate suffering, unhappiness and disease[1] in modern day clients. By bowing three times modern practitioners take refuge in the Triple Gem: the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha[2]. Both of these rituals do not call forth compassion by name; however, as the Buddha taught,

Compassion is that which makes the heart of the good move at the pain of others. It crushes and destroys the pain of others; thus, it is called compassion. It is called compassion because it shelters and embraces the distressed. – The Buddha.[3]

Is there such as thing as Healthy Fast Food- Mexican?

imageWell, I can’t answer that completely because it would depend on what you should be eating, your meal plan,  diet restrictions (DASH, diabetes, etc).  HOWEVER, I was in Chicago and without my packed lunch so I decided to hit Qdoba with a few of the other Thai Massage students.

I assumed my grilled veggie burrito would put me over the top for caloric intake, but also rationalized I had left the house too early to grab breakfast and would be stuck in late night traffic and miss a decent dinner.  Well, here I am at 1 am still a little hungry after some tofu and broccoli at 7pm.  I decided to google Qdoba Calories and boy was I shocked.

In one of the most innovative steps I have seen for a restaurant, especially a chain, Qdoba has an interactive menu calorie generator.  Simply pick what you put on your plate and it will give you a quick calorie read out, hover over that and you get the full monty.

Check it out at: qdoba calculator.

They also have sections for food allergies, so know before you go!

What is Thai Bodywork, Thai Massage or Nuad Boran?

A concise description of traditional Thai massage (Nuad Thai / Nuad Boran)

What is known in the West as Thai massage is not massage at all, but rather an ancient energy-based healing system that combines acupressure, reflexology, and assisted yoga postures. Treatment effects are enhanced when the patient is fully relaxed and breathing deeply. This traditional healing practice, called Nuad or Nuad Boran in the Thai language, stands in sharp contrast to western massage therapies.

Traditional Thai massage uses no oils or lotions, and the recipient remains clothed during a treatment. There is constant body contact between the practitioner and client, but rather than rubbing on muscles, the body is compressed, pulled, stretched and rocked in order to clear energy blockages and relieve tension. The practitioner uses thumbs, palms, forearms, elbows, knees and feet to create a dance of movement on the body of the recipient. In this process, joints are opened, muscles and tendons are stretched, internal organs are toned, and energy is balanced. The overall effect is one of deep relaxation, rejuvenation, and physical and mental well being.

Nuad Boran (known in various forms as Thai massage, Thai Yoga Massage, and other terms) began to evolve in Thailand over 2,000 years ago. Based on healing principles similar to those utilized in other non-western healing therapies, the Thai system focuses on circulation of vital energy in major pathways called sen. The major energy lines are manipulated, and important pressure points along these pathways are stimulated to help break down blockages, stimulate energy flow and restore balance and harmony.

Identifying features of traditional Thai massage are integrated yoga postures which are performed on the recipient. Through assisted yoga, the body is stretched in ways that are difficult to attain through individual exercise and yoga practice. The result of a full-body Thai treatment is often an exciting and powerful mind/body healing experience, bringing both the recipient and the practitioner to heightened states of physical and spiritual well-being.

For many, traditional Thai massage is also a spiritual discipline in that it incorporates the practices of mindfulness (breath awareness) and loving kindness (focused compassion). These techniques, when shared by practitioner and client, help bring the treatment session to a focused and deep level.

Sky Yoga Studio & More in Naperville, Illinois (scroll for posts)

Welcome

Here at Sky Studio we believe firmly that you can not compartmentalize people or yoga. Our style of teaching focuses on the individual and the cultivation of mind, body and spirit. Along these lines we consider ourselves to offer a more personal style of yoga. We will help you to take action, to change unhealthy habits and most of all teach you that the key to life is as Patanjali wrote “to remove the root cause of all suffering” and be happy.

Our classes do utilize breath techniques, chanting, mantras, mudras and asanas (postures) at different times, so please be aware of any technique that may be uncomfortable to you, and feel free to mention it to your instructor.

We live our yoga everyday. We teach from a place of authenticity. We hope to impart peace and happiness to all those we meet. Yoga is the joy of spirit that is shared with others.

Prenatal Yoga

Keeping active while pregnant is a recommendation of ACOG for healthy women. Prenatal fitness and yoga classes can help reduce the duration and intensity of labor, reduce the need for unnecessary interventions, keep moms fit and at a healthy weight post-natal. Baby yoga is a great way to introduce healthy touch and bond with your newborn. It can also alleviate common baby issues like gas.

Yoga for Kids

In our fast paced, overscheduled society we have created an environment of stress and burn-out for our children. Yoga offers a set time where children can relax and just "be". A strong foundation (in self) is the key to life long happiness. It is never too early to give our children a strong belief in themselves and their potential. Teaching children respect for themselves, their bodies and other living beings is one of the main goals of the Shining Kids Yoga™ program.

We offer fully integrated classes that strive to reach each child through styles suited to their individual learning needs. S.K.Y™ utilizes various children’s yoga postures and techniques and couples these techniques with a formal education background and experience with children. Our classes not only offer physical curriculum, they also focus on the emotional, psychological, and intellectual cultivation of each child. W e use large and fine motor movements, fantasy & imaginative play, relaxation, music, art and crafts in each of our classes.

Some benefits of Yoga for Children are:

· it helps children develop and nurture their problem solving abilities,

· strengthens and builds self-esteem,

· teaches self reliance, self-policing,

· uses brain balancing techniques,

· uses fine and gross motor skills; helps with balance, hand to eye co-ordination

· strengthens neural pathways,

· helps harness energy and teach self calming,

· awakens and cultivates creativity,

· Teaches respect for self and others

Bellydance classes are a part of our pass system.

Thai Bodywork

In Thailand, Nuad Boran, or Thai Massage, is offered as part of a larger healing system . It focuses on the “sen” energy lines in the body. Through movements of compression, thumbing, and stretching along these lines Thai bodywork releases blocks, frees congestion, chronic pain, and restores balance, health and energy. The practitioner moves a passive body through a series to help clients cultivate breath and relaxation.

This is a full-body holistic form of work that involves the physical, energetic, and emotional bodies. It is very closely related to yoga and ayurveda making it complimentary to practice.
