Huffington Reports: Restaurant Food up to 200% More Calories

Dieters can’t believe everything they read: The food at many popular chain restaurants and in the freezer section of the supermarket may contain a lot more calories than advertised.

A study of 10 chain restaurants, including Wendy’s and Ruby Tuesday, found that the number of calories in 29 meals or other menu items was an average of 18 percent higher than listed.

And frozen supermarket meals from Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers, Healthy Choice and South Beach Living had 8 percent more calories than the labels said, according to the study, published in this month’s Journal of the American Dietetic Association.

The researchers and other experts aren’t accusing restaurants and food companies of trying to deceive customers. They said most of the discrepancies can be explained by variations in ingredients, portion sizes and testing methods. For example, the teenager behind the counter might have put too much mayonnaise on one sandwich.

Still, "if every time you eat out, you get a couple of hundred calories or more than you think, that can add up really easily," said lead researcher Susan Roberts, a professor of nutrition at Tufts University. "There’s a big drumbeat for people putting calories on menus, but that’s only useful if the calories are right."

Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University who was not involved in the study, said she was not surprised by the findings. People might think nutrition labels are scientifically precise, but they are mostly ballpark figures, she said.

"It would never occur to me that the calories posted on menu boards are anything close to reality," Nestle said.

The study said most of the packaged food tested fell within the 20 percent margin of error allowed by the Food and Drug Administration.

Some items, like Domino’s large thin-crust cheese pizza, came in low. It had one-third fewer than the reported 180 calories per serving.

Wendy’s Ultimate Chicken Grill was found to have 9 percent more calories than the reported 320. P.F. Chang’s large Sichuan-style asparagus had more than double the 200 calories it was supposed to have. Ruby Tuesday’s baked potato with butter and sour cream came in on target, but researchers measured 3 percent more calories in McDonald’s McChicken sandwich, which is said to have 360 calories.

Wendy’s spokesman Bob Bertini said: "Since our food is prepared to order by restaurant teams, there can be small variances in the calorie count. For example, one sandwich might have a bit more mustard or ketchup. The next sandwich, the customer might choose to leave off the lettuce and tomato."

As the nation grapples with staggering obesity rates, local and state officials around the country have considered requiring chain restaurants to post nutrition information about their food. New York City, neighboring Westchester County, and King County in Washington state already have such regulations.

Despite the inaccuracies, Nestle said she believes nutrition information is useful. But she said people need to realize that a bagel listed at 303 calories could contain dozens more, or dozens fewer.

Researchers used a calorimeter to test food from Boston-area restaurants and grocers. They compared their results with calorie counts available from the companies in 2007 and 2008.

In a statement, a Denny’s spokeswoman said variations in portion sizes can occur from restaurant to restaurant. The company also said it uses local vendors for bread, dairy and produce, each of which could have different product formulations and sizes.

Denny’s questioned the study’s contention that its grits and butter had three times the 80 calories listed on the menu – the largest fluctuation of all foods tested. Denny’s said the researchers tested a 9.5-ounce serving instead of the 4-ounce one used in its own analysis.

"It would bother me if I counted on it to make my decision on what to get," Audrey Ledford, 55, of Torrance, Calif., said after having coffee with her son at a Los Angeles Denny’s. "It should be correct."

I love buns, yes I do, if you love buns don’t miss this

image My New Year is shaping up even better now that I took a trip to Meijer.  I am usually a Woodman’s Woman, but last night I needed some quick groceries – we had no buns and my boys are famous for their love of soy nut butter sandwiches.  I don’t buy high fructose corn syrup or hydrogenated oil laden products so normally I am out of luck at Meijer, they don’t carry Rudi’s or Natural Ovens. They do however carry this new product by Arnold called the Sandwich Thin.

I am a firm believer that a sandwich is not a sandwich without a bun or bread – I detest open face – which I have been doing lately in order to up the protein with two Boca burgers I split them across one bun.  Imagine my delight when I found these delectable buns that have only 100 calories, 1 gram of fat, 21 carbs (5 fiber) and 5 grams of protein.  I now can enjoy a bun for each, truth be told I don’t like giant fluffy buns, but I need something to hold my patty.

These are perfect for me, no weird taste (like filler from low calorie alternatives) these are simply shaved down, thinner versions of their larger counterparts. Chow down and enjoy!

Is there such as thing as Healthy Fast Food- Mexican?

imageWell, I can’t answer that completely because it would depend on what you should be eating, your meal plan,  diet restrictions (DASH, diabetes, etc).  HOWEVER, I was in Chicago and without my packed lunch so I decided to hit Qdoba with a few of the other Thai Massage students.

I assumed my grilled veggie burrito would put me over the top for caloric intake, but also rationalized I had left the house too early to grab breakfast and would be stuck in late night traffic and miss a decent dinner.  Well, here I am at 1 am still a little hungry after some tofu and broccoli at 7pm.  I decided to google Qdoba Calories and boy was I shocked.

In one of the most innovative steps I have seen for a restaurant, especially a chain, Qdoba has an interactive menu calorie generator.  Simply pick what you put on your plate and it will give you a quick calorie read out, hover over that and you get the full monty.

Check it out at: qdoba calculator.

They also have sections for food allergies, so know before you go!

Move over Jenny Craig, yoga claims spotlight for weight loss

August 7, 9:37 AM Yoga Examiner Jordann Rawls

Yoga isn’t new. Yoga is ancient. Losing weight also isn’t new. Men and women have been tackling weight loss for years. And in a head to head competition, yoga comes out on top.

In a recent study, led by researchers at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre (FHCRC), the impact of yoga on weight change, independent of other factors such as diet or other types of activity, was measured, monitored and calculated.

The study, a first of its kind to measure the effects of yoga on weight, involved 15,500 healthy, middle-aged me and women who filled out written surveys recalling physical activity and yoga along with weight history over a ten-year period of aging 45-55.

While weight gain was noted overall in individuals, FHCRC’s Alan R. Kristal, co-author of the study said, “Men and women who were of normal weight at age 45 and regularly practiced yoga gained about three fewer pounds during the test period that those who didn’t.”

But the physical aspect of yoga isn’t the only contributor. The LA Times credits “thin yogis” by anteing up another aspect of the FHCRC study. Titled, “The real reason people who carry yoga mats always look thin,” the LA Times credits yogic aspects of mindful eating as the real reason for low weight or weight loss among yogis.

“People who engage in the traditional form of exercise are more in tune with their bodies in general, including at meal times,” says the LA Times.

The article attributes mindful eating as the powerhouse behind the people that practice it.

Mindful eating people stop eating once they are full, even if delicious food remains on their plates. They try not to let tempting advertisements lure them to food; they avoid eating while they are distracted by a TV show or other diversion; and they don’t eat to distract themselves from emotions like stress or sadness,” the article says.

The moral of the story?

FHCRC study results suggest that yoga should be recommended for people trying to diet through more traditional means and practice mindful eating to assist with limiting portion sizes and only eating when necessary, co-author Kristal said.

The mental focus required to hold a difficult yoga pose also helps people avoid “eating more even when the food tastes good” or “eating when you’re not hungry,” Kristal said in a statement.

And while the study beckons readers for its proof that yoga does beat out other traditional means of weight loss strategy, the study also does a favor for yoga. By bringing the mindful eating into the study and into the media, yoga is becoming less of a trend and more of a lifestyle.
