Childhood Favorite Brings You Fitness Fast FXP Hula Hoop

261888_10151278243135962_103699219_nI recently received a FXP Hula Hoop Fitness Set for review, I was not compensated in any way and my opinions are freely expressed.

That’s me top left in the fuchsia shirt with hoodie, right after completing my second hooping certification.  I am an average hooper – I can keep my hoop up for a prolonged time, can do fitness moves, travel, etc. I am far from hoop dancing on a stage, but I enjoy the workout and that was why I jumped at the chance to review a new fitness system that involved hooping.

Niece’s video has a high production quality and the travel hoop is the best I have experienced.  My former travel hoop has tiny screws that were constantly coming loose after use making assembly and disassembly a nightmare without a screwdriver.  The FXP hoop pieces are solid molded plastic and have no hitches. The weight of the hoop is nice too, better than my former travel hoop. Its only downfall is the very bland appearance which honestly travels through to the workout video as well.

To be fair, the workout itself is fast paced, but it really misses the fun and whimsy that drew me to hooping.  I know hooping can be over the top, hoopers are up there with bellydancers for pageantry, costumes, etc.  I wasn’t expecting that but it would have been nice to have some more uplifting music or a more interesting set.  The feel was middle aged pilates class.  Before you say “hey now!”, that is my personal demographic too, but I don’t want to feel like I’ve come to a geriatric fitness class – I want a bit of fun. With hooping I want a little over the top, it doesn’t have to be over the edge, just make me feel alive and relevant.

Personal feel aside, the only other problem I had with the video is that there was never reverse hooping, and important skill and necessity to keep the body in balance.  The legs were switched periodically but in my training there were horror stories of hoopers who never switched directions and caused them selves some pelvic and muscular issues.

My kit came with a hoop, carry bag, DVD, and quick exercise poster.  It also included a small piece of matting that was labeled “non slip hoop surface” but beats me how it would help, being approximately a 4 x 4 inch square – literally my toes fit on it. FXP offers an array of Hula Hoop Kits – These specially designed kits come equipped with everything needed to help women reach their specific goals.  Choose from five kits including: FXP Starter Kit, FXP Cardio Sculpt, Total Body Makeover, Total Body Makeover Plus, and Create Your Own. Each kit comes with retractable hoop, carry bag, DVDs, guides and more! Kits start at an affordable $49.94.

Trainers receive the highest level of individual support in the industry, from business tools and webinars to lesson plans and troubleshooting support. I leave you with an explantation of the fitness system’s development “FXP Fitness was born from the idea that fitness should be an enjoyable, accessible experience that yields great results. It is a low to no impact program inspired by proven methods such as pilates, barre, and yoga, and combines them into a high intensity interval training system…all while using the specially designed fitness hula hoop. Perfect for toning arms, strengthening legs, and slimming middles, FXP is designed for ”all ages and all stages” and is backed by a recent metabolic study on the effectiveness of the FXP hula hoop and workout DCDs. Plus, its curriculum is easily modifiable to fit tight schedules, tight spaces, and lifestyles continuously on-the-go.”

Remember, any fitness program can work if you stick with it!

Pregnancy Health Yoga Book Explores Bump, Birth and Beyond

image

I was contacted to review this new book that is out in March.  I received no compensation and all opinions expressed are my own and given freely.

Let me start by saying I wasn’t impressed by the introduction that states you can start the book after your “12-14 weeks scan” after clearance from your
“doctor”.  I was under the impression that the UK was more midwife friendly, in turn meaning less intervention friendly and anyone into gentle natural birth I had assumed would keep propaganda such as this out of their book when a simple, “12-14 weeks pregnant” and “care provider” would suffice.

With the introduction out of the way I could focus on the bulk of the book which was very impressive.  Full color photos accompanied many if not all of the postures, each section started with affirmations for the expectant mother (something I have become very fond of in my own practice) and very detailed instructions.  I was familiar with all of the postures and found them to be well explained.  With any book you can always find subjective points to take issue with.  As I have progressed as a yoga teacher and doula over the last decade I have been made aware of some flaws in my past thinking and teaching.  One such flaw that I had was the need for all pregnant women at all times of pregnancy to “tuck the tailbone under” as shown on page 54.  After a recent training in prenatal education an interesting point was brought up about birth position, fetal position and pregnancy posture.  The optimal birth position is a supported squat that allows the tailbone to move away from the pubis and create space for the baby’s head.  Too much tucking during pregnancy can have a deleterious effect on what is actually a natural change in the body.  Weight does shift forward and create a slight anterior pelvic tilt for a reason, to place baby in the optimal birth position. I agree that lengthening the spine can alleviate lower back compression, but pregnant women should not worry about tucking the tailbone all the time unless they are experiencing pain symptoms.

I also thought the example on page 105 of leaning into the hands could be a little too much for some moms to handle.  The women in the photo is in a pose similar to ustrasana (camel pose) by the last frame, a more appropriate pose that would lessen the compression of the lower back that you can visibly see would be a tabletop (shown in the postnatal section) with the hips lifted, knees bent, feet on the floor firmly – it would accomplish the task of “leaning into the hands” without the possibility of overstretching the ligaments and bands in the front.  Sadly I speak from experience on this one, I do not recommend anything close to back bending unless it is fully supported during pregnancy.

After more than a decade teaching prenatal and postnatal yoga I have not found a more complete and user friendly guide than Pregnancy Health Yoga.  After baby there is a small postnatal section in the back of the book. It also comes with a 30 minute supplemental restorative yoga DVD that follows the outline provided by the book. You can use this to help you better visualize what the book outlines, or to prep you for your first prenatal yoga class. Had I not been a yoga instructor during all three of my pregnancies I would have definitely enjoyed a book such as this, it even contains brief “birth stories” in the margins.

Lee and Attwood have created this accessible guide and DVD of key practices that takes moms-to-be through every stage of pregnancy, birth, and beyond.  They explain breath work and provide guided meditations and visualizations; illustrated step-by-step routines; a directory of postures that target common pregnancy-related ailments; and exercises to get back in shape after giving birth. This is a definite baby shower gift or congratulations on your pregnancy announcement present.

Tracey Mallett’s FuseDance #CardioLean #CardioMelt DVDs

I was contacted to review two new exercise DVDs by Tracey Mallett, I received no compensation and the opinions given are my own.

Having been a fitness professional for the last 10 years I have seen a lot of DVDs and fitness fads come and go.

I was intrigued by Fuse Dance Cardio Lean as it promises a blend of jazz, ballet and pilates.  This is not a new concept in the fitness field, everyone is looking to fuse pilates with a variety of other formats – in fact there are other ballet, pilates, yoga fusions on the market.

What I liked most about these DVDs over others I have watched is the energy that Tracey brings to the material, the quality of the production and the upbeat tempo of the music. Music and setting can make or break a workout DVD.

I would have enjoyed Erica, the participant doing modifications, to have been closer to the camera, and maybe some other modifications shown.  There also was not a lot of direction given on how to protect the body from some of the moves, especially for some of the core type movements that were a bit fast paced.

This video was definitely a challenge, but it went by quickly and the burn was noticeable next day – similar to the Ballet Bootcamp class I run – I didn’t notice the intensity until I tried to walk the next day. I also caution that I had to shorten my range of motion a great deal, my joints could not keep up with the bouncing and rapid movements through some of the repetitions, especially on the curtsies.

The floor work was also challenging and may not be accessible to everyone, but those looking for a new challenge will love it. Again, Erica would have been better closer to the camera, in the second row and many times was not modifying

Tracey is a very warm instructor, quite authentic and not over bearing, her smile seems truly genuine and it was a pleasure watching her.

Her FuseDance Cardio Melt DVD picks up where the Cardio Lean left off, starting with salsa moves and sexier style. Again, funky upbeat music is a big attraction of this DVD too. Fifteen minutes in, third circuit, there is a re-introduction to the long, lean ballet inspired moves and some bouncy floor work that might be too much for those with sensitive joints.

Fourth Circuit plays with a little burlesque and hip-hop inspired moves, truly the DVD spans many genres but all in a fitness inspired manner.  There is not difficult choreography to follow, instead Tracey brings repetition and slow building combinations so participants never feel like they need to stop and figure out what is going on.

The second workout starts with free weights and kickboxing, I’m not sure how much weight the ladies are working with, but I’d say it looks like 5lbs, which seems a little high for the moves they are doing.  Swinging iron weights does come with inherent risks of muscle tears, and strain. For those in excellent condition, this may be a nice challenge, for those starting with free weights they may want to attempt to learn correct lifting form in a stationary format first.

#Coregeous With Jill Miller #Core #Exercise No Ripping No Shredding #BabyBelly Gone

Ever wondered why you would want to rip or shred your body.  How did the idea of violent verbs come into describing physical fitness, peak health and exercise?

I was contacted to review Jill Miller’s DVD Coregeous, I received no compensation and the opinions are my own.

Jill definitely knows the core, and as someone who loves to learn I found the DVD very informative regarding the muscles; however, the average purchaser probably does not need as much dialogue about the individual muscles.  The video is very verbose, there are only a few instances during breath work when Jill even uses a voiceover, otherwise she is always talking.  It is a far cry from the average abdominal DVD – I think in a good way but I’m not so certain that people looking for a sweaty, wear you out workout would respond the same.

I liked the exercises and the large amount of detailed directions.  This DVD is perfect for older individuals especially since there are not many “Sit-ups” or “Neck pulling” exercises until you get to Coreganization.

The use of trademarked words such as Corseo and Coregeous does get a little tiring but as a professional I understand the need to brand, brand, brand!

I also love that Jill has a regular looking belly, I’m pretty sure by the way it looks she has had children – she looks like a woman with a healthy core and spine – not some airbrushed idea of what fit looks like.

I highly recommend this DVD for people looking to strength their core, but I do caution, this DVD is not exciting. It is 105 minutes of slow moving, talking through precise movements – just like physical therapy.

What I enjoyed most about this DVD is the changing set and the menu with days of the week given and highlighted workouts.  So Day 1 can start any day you like and each day is different from the next.  To categorize this workout would be difficult, it truly is a fusion.  For those clients who ask for a DVD to replicate our Power Yoga Classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, I would say aspects of this video do that, especially Day 1’s second section (after the outfit change) and Day 5 reminds me of our Ballet Bootcamp.  I enjoyed Fred’s instruction, Elisabeth was good as well but it seemed as though she was reading from a prompt during the beginning of the Day 6 GiGong.

Here’s the thing about this DVD, I was hooked from the minute I hit start on the player and hear the music for the startup menu which surprised me because I was absolutely repulsed by the cover art. I actually really enjoyed watching this DVD and going through it.  This DVD is a definite “will use” and one of the first of its kind that I did not find annoying, trite or led by inauthentic instructors.  I loved the cast on this video, they were inviting and enjoyable – people I would take classes with.

Cheerobics: DVD Home Experience

I was recently contacted to review a new DVD Cheerobics, all opinions are my own and I was not compensated in any way.

The 2 Disc sets includes Disc2 which starts with a documentary highlighting the struggle to get Cheerleading recognized as a sport in the UK to the extent it is in the US, and a brief history of the start of cheerleading as a man’s pursuit in the 1800s to support varsity teams.

There is also a Pro Routine section featuring Zoo Fever Team’s aware winning routine that is considered challenging.  The routine is broken down in counts but moves fairly quickly for someone unfamiliar with cheering.

Disc 1 includes Motion Technique, Learn the Moves and Cheerobics Workout. Motion Technique breaks down positioning of hands and arms, how to move through the moves and basic technique. Learn the Moves breaks down individuals moves by their name such as Twist and Victory Box.

After watching the first two portion you are ready to grab your pom poms (included with the DVD set) and get to the Cheerobics Workout. The main section being Cardio (block 2 Choreography). The workout is progressively taught and builds on the warm up moves.  There is a decent amount of hopping which may not be for everyone. In their toning segment they do include modifications done by two participants but there is not a lot of direction on how to complete the moves safely.

The energy and smiles mixed with the modern popular music definitely makes this a fun DVD and workout, especially  for anyone whoever secretly wanted to be a cheerleader.

The DVDs are both well produced, the lighting and audio are great, the ladies in the video are athletic looking and do not rely on skimpy workout gear to sell you on the program – something I truly appreciate.

I would recommend Cheerobics for anyone looking to break out of the fitness DVD rut this is truly a new program and I hope it is well received.

Truly Extreme Burn Workout DVD, No Joke!

Extreme Burn is a six-week full body program, consisting for three workouts designed to dramatically drop pounds and enhance muscular performance. Each routine is jam-packed with dynamic compound strength moves and intense bursts of cardio that will fire up the metabolism, quickly shed unwanted fat, and build lean muscle to deliver maximum results.

ExtremeBurn_Back Cover I received an email to review another new interval training DVD on the market, I have received no compensation and the opinions expressed are freely my own.  Having reviewed several interval training DVDs in the last few months and being a fitness professional who runs bootcamp and interval training classes I feel confident commenting on the Extreme Burn: Total Interval Training DVD.

Let me start by saying I loved the simplicity of the set and music, though the constant panning of the camera was a bit distracting.  As expected all of the participants on the DVD were in excellent condition, something that should be noted because the DVD is truly extreme.  At 42 weeks pregnant I gave up teaching bootcamp 3 weeks ago so could not actually perform these high intensity moves at this time but can tell you that the exercises themselves were a combination of strength and cardio – which differentiates this DVD from others on the market.  There were no reps to count and honestly I have to question whether or not the average individual picking up this DVD could safely complete even workout 1, especially with the weight loads it appeared the participants were using.  The moves were rapid and included compound exercises performed for set times.

I watched all workouts and only once saw a modification between the two females in donkey kicks – one was almost kicking to handstand and the other only kicking to glutes.  The first warm up started with deep squats with a push to full range of motion – something many of my own clients with joint issues could not complete and probably most of those individuals considering losing weight and getting in shape would have safety concerns attempting.

This being said I think this DVD offers a very challenging workout, something I rarely find, for athletes and exercise enthusiasts who need a home workout or a change from regular training, but not for those new to exercise or those with any physical limitations.

I can’t wait for my post-partum period having taught 30 hours a week for the 9 months of pregnancy I am sure that this DVD could whip me back into pre-pregnancy shape in 3-4 months. Definitely recommended for those looking for an extreme challenge, who have experience with free weights and know correct form and alignment.

The DVD is exclusively available for $19.95 on www.mikedfitness.com.
